Course Description:
First Responders (Police, Firefighters, EMS, Corrections, Dispatch, etc.) comprise a very unique sub-culture of our society. The daily challenges faced by First Responders create an unimaginable amount of stress on their bodies, minds, and families. These challenges also create an “Us vs. Them” mentality which is often seen as guarded or “closed” to conventional therapeutic practices.
The traditional approaches to the treatment and evaluation can fall short when working with First Responders. Attend this seminar to learn how you can adapt your therapeutic approach to help First Responders achieve more successful outcomes.
In this training, you will develop confidence in your ability to understand the different cultures of the First Responder world as well as understand how to develop rapport and trust. You will learn how to compassionately and effectively work with First Responders who have experienced multiple traumatic events and prolonged trauma exposure over a career riddled with critical incidents.
Successful treatment requires a compassionate therapeutic relationship and effective, research-based interventions. After this two-day workshop you will learn how to:
Differentiate the cultures associated with Police, Fire, and Emergency Medicine
Develop a rapport, mutual understanding, and trust with First Responders
Understand the myths associated with working with First Responders
Gain an appreciation and reverence for traditions in the different First Responder cultures
Understand and hopefully break the “wall of silence”
Develop an understanding of how to effectively create useful integrative trauma treatment plan
Develop an understanding of how to effectively counsel a First Responder through a Line of Duty Death

DENNIS J. CARRADIN, JR.
Dennis Carradin is a Licensed Professional Counselor of Mental Health, a Nationally Certified Counselor, a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress, and a Diplomate for the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress.
Currently, he is the Executive Director of New Perspectives, Inc., a private counseling agency in Delaware, and has served on the faculty of Penn State University, Brandywine Campus, for 15 years. He is a Vice President and Principal Consultant for SSC Consulting. Dennis is a trained trainer for Crisis Care Network and serves on three international trauma firms.
Dennis is a former Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician and a former Emergency Medical Technician with the state of Delaware. He is a former volunteer Fire Fighter and serves as a LAST member for the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation in conjunction with the National Fire Academy. He is the clinical director and team coordinator of the New Castle County CISM team and serves as the State CISM Chairman for the Delaware Volunteer Fireman's Association. Dennis is the President elect and an active member of the Wilmington West Rotary Club. He is also listed in the National Center for Crisis Management’s directory of expert witnesses and premiere speakers bureau.
He has attended Millersville University, Temple University and Walden University. Dennis has conducted numerous debriefings in domestic as well as international disasters, shootings, bombings, bank robberies, corporate incidents, school disasters, and Fire, EMS, Police tragedies. He has responded to several national disasters including, but not limited to, the attacks on the WTC in NYC, Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, Sandy Hook Elementary School Shootings, The Boston Marathon Bombings, the Navy Yard shootings, the Pulse Nightclub shootings, and the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
LT. HAROLD BOZEMAN
Harold Bozeman is a sworn member of the Wilmington Police Department since Sept 30, 1996. He was promoted to Sgt. Feb 22, 2013 and recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in March of 2018. He currently serves as the team and training coordinator for the WPD CISM team and is a long-time volunteer with the New Castle County Public Safety CISM team.
Harold is a negotiator and team leader with the Wilmington Police Crisis Management / Hostage Negotiations Team since April 2012 and Team Leader / Supervisor Wilmington Police Honor Guard
In March 2013, He was appointed to serve as the team and training coordinator for the Wilmington PD Crisis Intervention Team. His team is currently staffed by 38 members. After completing his initial CIT training he was invited to sit on the Law Enforcement Advisory Board at NAMI DE and the State of Delaware CIT training committee. He also sits on the Board of Directors of NAMI Delaware.
Harold is a COPT Certified Police Instructor and has been developing and presenting various curricula, to include CISM, weapons of mass destruction response, hostage negotiations, and incident response to terrorist bombings for the Wilmington Police Academy since 2005. He is an instructor for the Office of Domestic Preparedness, certified through the New Mexico Institute for Science and Technology and Louisiana State University, to present their material for Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings, Law Enforcement Protective Measures, Law Enforcement Response to WMD Incidents, and Prevention and Response to Suicide Bombing Incidents. Harold has also developed and delivered seminars and training sessions for the Fraternal Order of Police National Conference and the FOP Leadership Matters Conference.
Harold is a certified Field Training Officer, trained through Pennsylvania State University. He attended the Penn State Police Officer Supervisor Initial Training and the FBI's Law Enforcement Executive Development Academy for Police Supervisors as well as their Command Leadership Academy. He has served on the FOP Lodge #1 board of directors since August 2008 and was elected President of the Lodge in October 2013.
Harold is currently assigned as a Watch Commander in the Uniformed Services Division where he is responsible for the management and day to day operations of a patrol platoon numbering approximately 35 Officers and four Sergeants.
He perviously supervised a team of officers serving on the Business Improvement Districts patrol unit, consisting of himself and six other officers. In that capacity he provided safety training and talks to members of the business community and sat on the Security Managers Committees for the Downtown Wilmington Business Improvement District and the Riverfront Wilmington Business Improvement District.

This seminar consists of 12.5 clock hours of continuing education instruction. Credit requirements and approvals vary per state board regulations. Please save the course outline, the certificate of completion you receive from the seminar and contact your state board or organization to determine specific filing requirements.
CE Credits are for full attendance at the two day seminar. After attendance has been verified, attendees will receive an email from The Trauma Survivors Foundation within one week. This email will contain a link to complete the seminar evaluation. Once the seminar evaluation is completed, a second email will be sent containing the seminar certificate. For those in partial attendance (arrived late or left early), a letter of attendance will be emailed to you after the completion of the seminar evaluation. For those in partial attendance, we will be unable to present a certificate to you.
